How effective is a liver function test for hepatitis A?

Liver function tests measure enzymes and other substances that may change when the liver is inflamed. Hepatitis A can cause a marked change in these results, but similar patterns may occur with other viral infections, medicines or liver conditions. The panel cannot identify the hepatitis A virus on its own.

Diagnosis uses the history and examination together with hepatitis A antibody testing. Recent exposure, nausea, poor appetite, dark urine, pale stools, fever or yellowing of the skin can help a clinician decide which tests are appropriate. Some people have few symptoms.

Contact a clinician if hepatitis A is suspected or you have had a relevant exposure. Avoid alcohol and check before taking medicines or supplements that may affect the liver. Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and ask about protecting household contacts while the diagnosis is being clarified.

Seek urgent help for confusion, extreme sleepiness, repeated vomiting, bleeding, severe dehydration or rapidly worsening yellow skin and eyes. Request prompt medical advice for dark urine, pale stools, fever, nausea or abdominal discomfort after a possible exposure.
