How effective is hormonal coil for polycystic ovary syndrome?

Polycystic ovary syndrome can lead to infrequent or unpredictable periods because ovulation may not happen regularly. When the womb lining is exposed to hormones for a long time without a bleed, it may become thicker. A hormonal coil releases progestogen in the womb, helping keep that lining thin and often making bleeding lighter.

The coil does not generally correct acne, unwanted hair growth, insulin-related changes or the underlying pattern of ovulation. It also prevents pregnancy while in place, but it is not a fertility treatment. PCOS care may need separate support for metabolic health, skin symptoms or plans for pregnancy.

Tell your clinician how often you bleed, whether pregnancy is a current goal, and whether you have had anaemia, pelvic infections or problems with intrauterine contraception. Discuss how the coil fits with any medicines for blood sugar, skin or fertility.

Expect some bleeding changes after insertion and arrange the follow-up recommended by your clinician. Keep a note of bleeding, pelvic pain and side effects. If periods remain absent or symptoms change, ask whether another assessment is needed rather than assuming the coil explains everything.

Get urgent medical advice for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding with faintness or marked weakness, fever, unusual discharge, a positive pregnancy test with pain, or a suspected displaced coil. These signs need assessment even if you have longstanding PCOS.

Ask how the coil will protect your womb lining, which PCOS symptoms require another treatment, how contraception affects your pregnancy plans, and what bleeding pattern should trigger review. Ask when to check your wider health, including blood pressure and glucose-related risks.
