How effective is facet joint injection for cervical spondylosis?

Facet joint injection can ease neck pain from irritated cervical facet joints, but relief varies and does not reverse cervical spondylosis. It tends to help most when an examination and imaging review suggest that a facet joint is contributing to the pain. The injection may be used to test that pain source as well as to provide treatment. Some people notice meaningful relief for a limited period, while others notice little change because their symptoms come from another structure, such as a nerve, disc, or muscle.

Cervical spondylosis describes age-related wear in the bones, discs, and joints of the neck. Facet joints sit at the back of the spine and guide movement. Wear or inflammation in these joints can cause local neck pain and stiffness, sometimes with pain spreading toward the shoulder or upper back. Keep a simple record of pain, movement, sleep, and arm symptoms after the procedure. This helps the clinician judge whether the injection was useful and choose the next step.

Contact the treating service promptly if injection-site redness, swelling, drainage, fever, or worsening pain develops. Seek urgent medical assessment for new or increasing arm or hand weakness, loss of coordination, trouble walking, widespread numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can indicate nerve or spinal-cord involvement and should not be judged by whether the injection relieved your neck pain. Sudden severe neck pain after an injury also needs prompt assessment.

Ask which finding makes a facet joint the suspected pain source, what improvement would count as a useful response, how long you should monitor the result, and what alternatives are available if the injection does not help. Also ask which activities and exercises are appropriate afterward, when to restart driving or work, and which symptoms should prompt an urgent call.
