How effective is electrosurgery for venous lake?

A venous lake is a soft blue or purple collection of widened superficial veins, often on a sun-exposed lip or ear. Electrosurgery delivers controlled heat to the vessel so it can collapse and heal. The clinician first confirms that the mark fits a venous lake, since other pigmented or vascular lesions can look similar.

The colour and fullness may fade as the treated vessel settles. Bruising, crusting, swelling and temporary or lasting pigment change are possible. A larger, deeper or easily bleeding lesion may call for a different vascular treatment or a specialist assessment.

Tell the clinician about bleeding problems, medicines that affect clotting, implanted electrical devices and a tendency to form raised scars. Follow instructions for cleaning and protecting the treated site. Avoid picking a crust, friction and strong sun exposure while the skin is healing. Do not puncture or burn a blue lip spot at home.

Seek advice if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, or if increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever appears. Arrange assessment for a lesion that changes quickly, becomes persistently painful, or does not behave like the diagnosed venous lake. Sudden marked swelling of the lip or difficulty breathing requires urgent care.
