How effective is electrosurgery for venous lake?

How the structures involved in Venous Lake differ from normal

Short answer

Electrosurgery can be effective for a diagnosed venous lake, but the spot may need careful treatment and can recur or leave colour change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Treatment target
A superficial widened vein
Common sites
The lip or ear
Possible after-effects
Crusting, bruising or colour change

How the treatment works

A venous lake is a soft blue or purple collection of widened superficial veins, often on a sun-exposed lip or ear. Electrosurgery delivers controlled heat to the vessel so it can collapse and heal. The clinician first confirms that the mark fits a venous lake, since other pigmented or vascular lesions can look similar.

The colour and fullness may fade as the treated vessel settles. Bruising, crusting, swelling and temporary or lasting pigment change are possible. A larger, deeper or easily bleeding lesion may call for a different vascular treatment or a specialist assessment.

What to do around treatment

Tell the clinician about bleeding problems, medicines that affect clotting, implanted electrical devices and a tendency to form raised scars. Follow instructions for cleaning and protecting the treated site. Avoid picking a crust, friction and strong sun exposure while the skin is healing. Do not puncture or burn a blue lip spot at home.

When to seek care

Seek advice if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, or if increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus or fever appears. Arrange assessment for a lesion that changes quickly, becomes persistently painful, or does not behave like the diagnosed venous lake. Sudden marked swelling of the lip or difficulty breathing requires urgent care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, why electrosurgery fits the lesion’s depth and location, what healing will look like, and whether a vascular laser or another option may be safer for your skin. Ask what bleeding plan applies if the spot is on the lip.

Questions people ask

Will a venous lake disappear after electrosurgery?

It may become flatter and less visible, but the response varies with vessel depth and size. A clinician can explain whether another session or a different treatment is appropriate.

Can electrosurgery be used on a blue spot on the lip?

Only after the spot has been examined and identified. Blue lesions can have different causes, and lip treatment needs careful control of heat and bleeding.
