How effective is chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma?

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma includes different diseases that behave and respond differently. Chemotherapy may be combined with an antibody medicine or another treatment, and the aim can be to remove detectable lymphoma, control slower-growing disease, relieve pressure from enlarged nodes, or treat lymphoma outside the lymph nodes.

The team identifies the subtype using tissue tests and considers the areas involved, symptoms, blood counts, organ function, and previous treatment. Examinations, blood tests, scans, and sometimes a marrow test help assess response and guide the next decision.

Share medicines, supplements, allergies, infections, dental problems, and vaccination history with the team. Ask which side effects to expect and how to manage nausea, mouth changes, fatigue, constipation, or diarrhoea. Keep a written record of symptoms and temperature.

Attend blood tests and treatment visits as planned. Tell the team if a swollen area becomes painful, breathing or swallowing becomes harder, or daily activities become difficult. The plan can be adjusted when examination findings, test results, or side effects change.

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever or chills, new breathlessness, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, uncontrolled pain, unusual bleeding, or confusion. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, or sudden weakness.

Lymphoma and its treatment can affect infection-fighting cells, blood counts, and organs. Rapidly worsening swelling in the neck or chest can interfere with breathing or swallowing and needs urgent assessment.
