How effective is breast reconstruction for breast cancer?

Reconstruction may use an implant, the person's own tissue, or a combination of techniques. It can be performed at the same operation as mastectomy or after other cancer treatment. Some people choose delayed reconstruction or no reconstruction, and each option is a valid personal decision.

The reconstructed breast can improve contour and symmetry, but it may not have the same sensation, movement, or appearance as the original breast. Radiation, wound healing, smoking, diabetes, body shape, and future operations can affect the result. Reconstruction does not remove the need for cancer surveillance.

Meet both the breast cancer surgeon and a plastic surgeon early enough to discuss timing. Ask how chemotherapy or radiation could affect reconstruction, where scars will be, what recovery involves, and whether more than one procedure may be needed. Share your priorities about appearance, sensation, activity, and recovery.

After surgery, contact the team for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound opening, fever, new swelling, or pain that is worsening rather than settling. Seek urgent care for chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden weakness, or heavy bleeding.
