How effective is antiviral treatment for shingles?

Shingles happens when the chickenpox virus becomes active again in a nerve and nearby skin. Antiviral medicine slows the virus while the immune system clears the episode. It may reduce the formation of new blisters and help the rash settle sooner, but it does not instantly remove pain or erase marks already present. Pain relief and skin care may be needed alongside the antiviral.

Benefit depends on timing, age, immune health, the affected body area, and how extensive the episode is. Treatment decisions still matter when the rash has been present for a while, especially for people at higher risk or with new lesions.

Contact a clinician as soon as you notice a one-sided painful or burning rash with blisters. Take the prescribed antiviral as directed and use recommended pain relief. Keep blisters clean and covered with loose clothing, avoid scratching, and wash hands after touching the area. Until lesions crust over, avoid direct contact between the rash and people who have not had chickenpox or vaccination, pregnant people, newborns, and those with weakened immunity.

Seek urgent care for a rash on the forehead, nose, or around the eye; eye pain or vision changes; facial weakness; severe headache, confusion, weakness, or difficulty walking; widespread lesions; or rapidly worsening illness. Ask promptly about care if you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant. New or persistent nerve pain after the rash settles also deserves medical review.
