How effective is allergy testing for chronic sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis involves persistent inflammation in the nose and sinuses. Allergy testing may show sensitivity to airborne allergens, including dust mites, pollen, mould, or animal dander, which can aggravate nasal swelling in some people. A positive finding shows an immune response; it does not prove that allergy is the only reason for facial pressure, reduced smell, drainage, or blockage. Other contributors can include infection, nasal polyps, structural narrowing, irritants, or dental problems.

A negative result can redirect the assessment, but it does not make ongoing sinus symptoms imaginary or rule out every inflammatory cause. Examination and, when appropriate, nasal or sinus evaluation remain central.

Share the timing of congestion, sneezing, itching, seasonal changes, home conditions, and workplace exposures. Follow the preparation advice for testing, including any medication instructions. If a relevant sensitivity is found, discuss targeted dust reduction, ventilation, and treatment for nasal inflammation. Do not assume that removing all household items is necessary. Continue the sinus treatment plan and seek review if symptoms persist, smell changes, or repeated courses of treatment are needed.

Arrange assessment for symptoms that continue despite treatment, recur frequently, or interfere with sleep, work, or smell. Seek urgent care for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache with fever, confusion, stiff neck, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. These signs need prompt examination rather than routine allergy testing.
