How effective is allergy testing for asthma?

Some people with asthma have symptoms that worsen around allergens such as dust mites, pollen, mould, or animal dander. Skin-prick or blood testing can show sensitisation to selected substances and may help connect symptoms with particular settings or seasons. A positive result does not establish that the allergen caused each episode, and a negative panel does not exclude non-allergic triggers such as viral illness, smoke, exertion, or cold air.

Testing does not replace breathing tests, a symptom history, or review of inhaler use. Its value is greatest when the result changes a practical decision, such as reducing a relevant exposure or considering a treatment approach with a clinician.

Describe wheeze, cough, chest tightness, and breathlessness alongside the places, activities, and times when they occur. Continue your prescribed controller and reliever plan unless your clinician changes it. Ask whether medicines affect the chosen test and follow preparation instructions. If a meaningful trigger is identified, discuss ventilation, dust control, pet exposure, workplace protection, or seasonal planning rather than attempting to remove every possible allergen. Keep an asthma action plan and review it when symptoms change.

Book a review when asthma symptoms wake you, limit normal activity, require reliever medicine more often than expected, or follow a repeated exposure. Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey lips, marked drowsiness, or symptoms that do not improve with the emergency plan. Allergy testing is not a substitute for urgent asthma treatment.
