How does non-surgical spinal decompression work?

Short answer
Non-surgical spinal decompression uses controlled, intermittent traction on a motorised table to alter spinal loading without an operation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Method
- Programmed traction with periods of release or altered force.
- What it is not
- It is not an operation and does not remove disc material.
What a session involves
You lie on a Spinal Decompression Table while a harness supports the selected part of the body. The table applies a programmed pulling force, then releases or changes it in cycles. The clinician adjusts the position and force to your symptoms and tolerance. The treatment may temporarily reduce pressure or make movement more comfortable, but it cannot physically remove a disc fragment or guarantee that a structural problem has changed. A Herniated Disc, Lower Back Pain, or Radiating Leg Pain may have different causes that need separate assessment.
How to approach treatment
Tell the clinician about osteoporosis, recent surgery, fractures, inflammatory disease, pregnancy, cancer, or symptoms of nerve and spinal cord compression before treatment. Wear comfortable clothing and report increased pain, tingling, dizziness, or new weakness during a session. Keep track of whether relief lasts beyond the appointment and whether function improves. A broader plan may include exercise, activity changes, or another treatment. Traction Therapy is a related approach with its own technique and suitability considerations.
When to seek care
Stop and seek clinical advice if treatment causes escalating pain, new weakness, spreading numbness, or loss of balance. Urgent assessment is needed for new bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the genitals, severe unrelenting pain, fever with back pain, or rapidly worsening leg symptoms. These warning signs need medical evaluation rather than continued traction.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what diagnosis the treatment is intended to address, why traction is suitable for you, how progress will be measured, how many sessions may be reviewed, and what alternatives exist if symptoms persist.

Questions people ask
Do I need to be asleep for decompression therapy?
No. It is delivered while you are awake so the clinician can adjust the session to your response.
Can it cure every cause of back pain?
No. Back and leg symptoms have varied causes, and treatment should match an assessment of the underlying problem.
