How does laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy work?

With you under anaesthesia, the surgeon introduces a camera through a small abdominal opening and examines the pelvis. Other small openings allow fine instruments to reach the ovary. The cyst is opened or separated from the surrounding ovarian tissue, removed, and sent for laboratory examination when appropriate.

The surgeon aims to preserve as much healthy ovary as possible. The technique may differ according to the cyst’s size, appearance, position, and whether it is an ovarian endometrioma. Sometimes the planned keyhole approach needs to change if safe removal cannot be achieved that way.

Discuss the reason for surgery, the appearance of the cyst, fertility wishes, and whether the ovary can be conserved. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, and previous abdominal operations. After surgery, follow advice about wound care, lifting, exercise, driving, and sex. Mild abdominal soreness, bloating, and shoulder discomfort can occur during early recovery.

Ask how the cyst will be followed after removal and when the laboratory result will be discussed. An ovarian cyst is not the same as ovarian torsion; sudden twisting symptoms require urgent assessment.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden severe pelvic pain, persistent vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding, fever, worsening abdominal swelling, difficulty passing urine, or a wound that becomes increasingly red or starts draining. Sudden severe pain can be a warning sign of ovarian torsion or another complication.

Ask what type of cyst is suspected, whether healthy ovarian tissue can be preserved, what happens if the cyst is difficult to remove, and when you can expect the laboratory result.
