How does curettage and cautery work?

After the area is cleaned and numbed, the clinician uses a curette, a small spoon-shaped instrument, to remove soft or raised tissue. Cautery then uses heat or an electrosurgical unit to seal small blood vessels and treat residual tissue at the base. The combination can be repeated in the same session when the lesion's appearance and depth call for it.

A shallow wound usually heals by forming a protective crust and new surface skin. Tenderness, slight bleeding, redness, swelling, pigment change or a scar can occur. The technique is used for selected lesions such as pyogenic granuloma, some seborrheic keratoses, corns and calluses, or dermatosis papulosa nigra; diagnosis comes before removal.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, implanted electrical devices, allergies, poor wound healing and previous raised scars. Follow instructions for keeping the wound clean and covered. Do not pick the crust, soak the area unless advised, or apply strong products while it heals. Cryotherapy may be considered instead for some lesions, but the choice depends on the diagnosis, site and depth.

Apply gentle pressure and contact the clinic if bleeding continues, pain is increasing, redness spreads, swelling becomes marked or discharge develops. Seek prompt care for fever, red streaking or feeling acutely unwell. Arrange review if the wound does not steadily improve or the lesion returns, because the area may need reassessment.
