How does botox work?

Botulinum toxin type A is injected into carefully chosen muscles. It interrupts communication between the nerve and muscle, so that muscle contracts less strongly. As the treated muscle moves less, overlying skin is folded less often and dynamic lines may look softer. This approach is commonly used for forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet. It does not replace lost skin volume or fill a crease in the same way as a dermal filler, and it does not treat every type of wrinkle.

A qualified clinician should assess facial movement, skin quality, symmetry, medicines, and previous injections before choosing sites and dose. Describe your preferred expression and any history of eyelid drooping, swallowing difficulty, neuromuscular disease, or allergy. After treatment, follow the clinic's advice and avoid rubbing injection sites. Mild redness, tenderness, bruising, headache, or a temporary change in movement can occur. Review the result with the injector rather than requesting extra treatment immediately.

Get urgent medical help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, widespread weakness, facial swelling, or a severe allergic reaction. Contact the treating clinic for marked eyelid or eyebrow drooping, double vision, worsening asymmetry, severe pain, or signs of infection. These problems need assessment, particularly if they progress beyond the injection area.
