How common is wheezing in asthma?

Short answer
Wheezing is a very common presentation of Asthma, although some people have cough or chest tightness more than audible wheeze.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How asthma wheeze behaves
In asthma, the airway lining becomes sensitive and the muscles around the airways can tighten, making airflow turbulent. Wheeze can come and go, and it may be more noticeable at night, early in the morning, during exercise or after exposure to smoke, dust, cold air or an infection. Its absence at a particular moment does not rule asthma in or out.
A clinician looks at the whole pattern, including recurring cough, breathlessness, chest tightness, triggers and response to treatment. Testing may be arranged to assess how air moves through your lungs.
Managing symptoms day to day
Follow your written asthma action plan if you have one, including the instructions for reliever and preventer medicines. Check inhaler technique with a pharmacist or clinician, because the medicine needs to reach the lungs to work as intended. Record symptoms, night waking, activity limits and likely triggers to support a treatment review.
When to get help
Seek urgent medical help if breathing becomes rapidly harder, a reliever inhaler is not helping as expected, you cannot speak comfortably in full sentences, or lips or face look blue or grey. Arrange a prompt review when wheezing is increasing, interrupts sleep, or you need reliever treatment more often than your plan anticipates.
Useful appointment questions
Ask whether your current symptoms suggest good asthma control, whether your inhaler technique should be checked, and which triggers are most relevant to avoid. Ask for a written plan that explains what to do when symptoms begin to worsen.
