How common is testicular pain in inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the lower abdominal wall. Discomfort may travel from the groin into the scrotum because the inguinal canal contains structures connected with the testicle. Pain can feel like aching, heaviness, pulling or burning and may become more noticeable when standing, coughing, lifting or straining.

The symptom does not confirm the cause by itself. Testicular pain can also arise from infection, inflammation, injury, twisting of the testicle or other groin problems. A clinician may examine the abdomen, groin and scrotum and decide whether imaging or surgical assessment is needed.

Arrange a medical assessment if pain is new, recurring or accompanied by a groin lump. Until assessed, avoid heavy lifting and activities that clearly worsen the discomfort. Note whether the lump changes when you lie down, whether coughing brings it out, and whether the pain is on one side or both.
