How common is painful urination in kidney infection?

Burning, stinging or discomfort while passing urine can occur when infection irritates the urinary tract. With a kidney infection, people may also feel feverish, shivery, sick, unusually tired, or develop pain in the side or back beneath the ribs. The presence of painful urination alone does not identify where the problem is located.

Arrange a medical assessment promptly if painful urination is new or persistent, especially when it comes with back or side pain. A clinician may ask about symptoms, examine you and test a urine sample to look for infection. Drink fluids if you can do so comfortably, but do not rely on fluids alone when you feel unwell.

Seek urgent medical care for fever with flank pain, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or trouble keeping fluids down. Get urgent advice if you are pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or symptoms are worsening quickly. These features need timely assessment because an upper urinary infection can make someone very unwell.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest an infection involving the kidney or a lower part of the urinary tract, whether a urine test is needed, and which changes should prompt urgent review. Mention previous urine infections, kidney problems, medicines and pregnancy if relevant.
