How common is pain during sex in genitourinary syndrome of menopause?

Lower oestrogen levels can make vulval and vaginal tissues thinner, drier, and less flexible. This may cause burning, soreness, small tears, or deep discomfort during sex. Some people also notice vaginal dryness, urgency, burning when urinating, or repeated urinary symptoms. Symptoms can develop during or after the menopause transition and may vary over time. Pain during sex can also result from infection, skin conditions, pelvic floor tension, or another pelvic problem, so it should not be self-diagnosed.

Describe whether discomfort is at the entrance, deeper inside, or present afterward, and mention dryness, urinary changes, bleeding, or skin irritation. A clinician can check for tissue changes and other causes, then discuss moisturisers, lubricants, local or systemic treatment, pelvic floor support, or other choices suited to your medical history. Allow more time for arousal and stop if pain increases. Do not use perfumed products inside the vagina.

Arrange an assessment for persistent or worsening pain, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, sores, new urinary symptoms, or symptoms that affect daily life. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, fainting, or heavy bleeding. New bleeding after menopause also deserves prompt medical review, even when dryness seems likely.
