How common are night sweats in tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is an infection that can affect the lungs and other parts of the body. Sweating during sleep may accompany fever as the immune system responds. A cough that does not settle, fever, tiredness, reduced appetite, weight change, chest discomfort or coughing blood can add important context, although symptoms vary with the affected body area.

Night sweats have many other causes, including common infections, medicines, hormonal changes and a warm sleeping environment. The symptom does not show how likely tuberculosis is in an individual. Exposure history, travel or residence, immune health and examination findings guide testing.

Arrange medical advice for repeated night sweats with a persistent cough, fever, unusual fatigue or weight change. Tell the clinician about close contact with tuberculosis, previous testing, travel or residence in areas where it is more common, and medicines that affect immunity. Do not stop prescribed treatment early; tuberculosis care requires a clinician’s plan.

Seek urgent help for coughing blood, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion or fainting. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for persistent cough with fever and drenching sweats, particularly after close contact with someone who has tuberculosis.
