How common is coughing up blood in pneumonia?

Pneumonia inflames the airways and nearby lung tissue. Forceful coughing can irritate small surface blood vessels, so mucus may contain pink, red, or rust-coloured streaks. Fever, chills, breathlessness, chest pain that worsens with breathing, tiredness, and phlegm can occur as well. The appearance of blood varies, and the symptom can also arise from bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, a blood clot, or another lung problem. It should be assessed in context.

Tell your clinician about any blood in sputum and whether it is increasing, recurring, or mixed with more mucus. Follow the prescribed pneumonia treatment, rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking. Do not use leftover antibiotics or change a prescribed course without advice. If you have a long-term lung condition or take medicine that affects clotting, mention this during assessment.

Get emergency help for heavy or continuing bleeding, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or blue lips. Seek prompt review if fever or breathing problems are worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, or the blood returns after treatment begins. Sit upright if breathing is difficult and ask someone to stay with you while help is arranged.
