How common is cough in asthma?

Asthma can narrow and irritate the airways, making them sensitive to smoke, dust, cold air, infections, or exertion. The cough may be dry, may come and go, and can occur with wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Cough by itself has several possible causes, so its presence does not establish asthma. A clinician may consider when it starts, what brings it on, and whether symptoms vary over time.

Keep a brief record of cough timing, triggers, sleep disruption, wheeze, and any reliever medicine use. Follow your prescribed asthma plan and use inhalers with the technique shown by your clinician. Avoid tobacco smoke and other known irritants. Arrange an assessment if the cough is new, persistent, or interfering with sleep, work, or activity; testing may help clarify whether airway narrowing is involved.

Seek urgent medical help if breathing becomes difficult, you cannot speak comfortably because of breathlessness, your lips look blue or grey, or your reliever is not helping as directed. Contact a clinician promptly for a marked change from your usual asthma pattern, repeated night waking, fever with worsening breathing, or coughing blood.
