Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. It more often produces discomfort in the upper abdomen, but burning or discomfort can be felt higher up and be described as chest pain. Symptoms may occur with nausea, bloating, belching, reduced appetite, or a burning sensation after eating. Alcohol, anti-inflammatory pain medicines, infection, and stress on the body can contribute to stomach irritation. Heart-related chest symptoms and digestive symptoms can overlap, so the location or character of pain cannot reliably sort them out at home.

Arrange a medical review if the discomfort keeps returning, follows meals, or comes with ongoing stomach symptoms. Bring a list of all medicines and supplements, including pain relievers, because some can irritate the stomach. Until you are assessed, avoid alcohol and do not take more anti-inflammatory pain medicine unless a clinician has advised it. Smaller meals and avoiding foods that repeatedly trigger burning may reduce irritation for some people, but they do not replace an evaluation of chest symptoms.

Get emergency help for sudden, severe, persistent, or unexplained chest pain, particularly if there is shortness of breath, sweating, faintness, or pain moving into the arm, jaw, neck, or back. Seek prompt medical care for vomiting blood, black stool, repeated vomiting, or worsening upper abdominal pain. These warning signs need assessment without assuming gastritis is responsible.
