Does gastritis cause chest pain?

Inflammation in the stomach lining can produce burning or aching in the upper abdomen, and nearby discomfort may be felt beneath the breastbone. It may occur with nausea, indigestion, early fullness, or discomfort after eating. These symptoms overlap with reflux, muscle strain, and heart or lung problems. The character, timing, and triggers of pain help a clinician judge the safest next step; location alone is not enough.

Arrange medical advice if chest discomfort is new, recurring, or not settling. Note whether it follows meals, changes with movement, or comes with nausea or sour fluid. Avoid alcohol and known stomach irritants while waiting for advice. Use only medicines that are suitable for you, and tell the clinician about anti-inflammatory pain relievers, heart medicines, and any treatment already tried.

Call emergency services for pressure, squeezing, or severe chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, unusual weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Get urgent help for sudden worsening or pain after exertion. Do not assume a chest symptom is gastritis until serious causes have been considered.
