Short answer

Bedwetting is a common presentation of Type 1 Diabetes because high blood glucose can increase urine production.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why wetting may return

When blood glucose is high, the kidneys may pass extra glucose and water into the urine. This can cause frequent urination, strong thirst, tiredness, and new or returning bedwetting in a child who was previously dry. Weight loss, blurred vision, or changes in mood may also occur. Bedwetting has other causes, so it does not by itself establish type 1 diabetes.

What to do now

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new bedwetting with increased thirst, frequent daytime urination, tiredness, or weight loss. A clinician can check glucose and urine and explain the next step. Offer normal fluids and do not restrict drinking to prevent wetting. Do not delay assessment while trying household bladder routines if several symptoms appeared together.

Urgent warning signs

Get urgent help for vomiting, stomach pain, deep or fast breathing, fruity-smelling breath, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, or rapid deterioration. These can signal a serious glucose problem requiring immediate treatment. A child or adult who seems very unwell should not be left to wait for a routine appointment.

Questions for your doctor

Questions people ask

Does bedwetting alone mean type 1 diabetes?

No. Bedwetting has several possible causes, but new wetting with thirst or frequent urination deserves prompt assessment.

Why does high glucose increase urination?

The kidneys may remove extra glucose with water, producing more urine and sometimes causing nighttime wetting.
