Hot itchy scalp: common causes and care

Flaking that is fine or greasy may occur with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis. Thick, sharply outlined scale extending beyond the hairline can fit scalp psoriasis. Tender bumps around hairs may suggest folliculitis. Intense itch with visible nits attached to hairs, or similar itching among household contacts, raises concern for head lice. Burning after a dye, shampoo, oil, or styling product can be contact irritation. The scalp may feel hot because it is inflamed, scratched, sun-exposed, or covered by occlusive products; that sensation alone does not identify the cause.

Pause any new scalp product and rinse away residue with lukewarm water. Avoid scratching, tight hairstyles, and hot blow-drying while the skin is sore. Use a gentle shampoo, and do not share combs, brushes, hats, or towels if lice are possible. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend medicated shampoo treatment for an appropriate scalp condition; suspected lice need a lice-specific plan and careful checking of close contacts. Do not apply household chemicals or repeated treatments without guidance.

Arrange assessment for hair loss in patches, pus, crusting, severe tenderness, swollen glands, or symptoms that continue despite suitable self-care. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, fever, facial swelling, or a painful scalp eruption. A child, pregnant person, or someone with a weakened immune system should get tailored advice before using medicated products.
