Short answer

A horrible headache early in pregnancy may come from dehydration, missed meals, stress, sleep changes or infection, but severe, new or persistent pain should be assessed promptly.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Helpful first steps
Fluids, a small meal, rest and a quiet environment
Mention to a clinician
A new, severe, persistent or unusual headache
Urgent warning signs
Neurological changes, severe visual symptoms, fever with stiff neck or repeated vomiting

What the headache may mean

Early pregnancy can bring changes in sleep, appetite, fluids and caffeine intake. These can trigger a pressure-like or throbbing headache. A viral illness, nasal inflammation or anxiety can also contribute; a headache is a presentation of these conditions, not proof that you have one. You can read about Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, Common Cold, COVID-19, Dehydration, Dengue Fever, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Heat Exhaustion if your other symptoms point in those directions.

Describe when the pain began, where it is, how quickly it became severe, and whether it differs from headaches you have had before. Vision changes, fever, vomiting, neck stiffness, weakness or confusion make the situation more urgent.

What you can do now

Rest in a quiet, dim room and sip fluids regularly. If you have not eaten, try a small meal or snack. A cool cloth, gentle neck relaxation and a break from screens may help. Avoid taking new medicines, herbal products or leftover prescriptions without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on an appropriate pain reliever and dose for your circumstances.

Keep a brief record of the timing, severity, possible triggers, temperature and any associated symptoms. Arrange medical advice the same day if the pain is intense, keeps returning, does not settle with simple measures, or feels unlike your usual headache.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical care now for a sudden explosive headache, fainting, confusion, seizure, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, severe vision change, high fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, or a headache after a head injury. Contact your maternity team or an urgent service promptly for severe pain with facial or hand swelling, upper abdominal pain or marked visual symptoms. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, confused or unsafe.

Useful questions for your doctor

Could this headache be related to dehydration, infection, blood pressure or another pregnancy concern? Which pain medicines and non-drug measures are suitable for me? What symptoms should make me seek urgent care, and when should I arrange follow-up if the headache continues?

Questions people ask

Can dehydration cause a severe headache early in pregnancy?

Yes. Nausea, vomiting, heat or simply drinking less can reduce fluid intake and trigger headache. Ongoing vomiting, very dark urine, dizziness or inability to keep fluids down needs medical advice.

Is every headache early in pregnancy dangerous?

No. Many headaches have manageable triggers, but severity, persistence, a sudden onset or associated warning signs determine how quickly you should be assessed.
