Honking cough in adults: what to know

A cough may sound like a honk when the throat or larger airways are irritated, narrowed or inflamed. A common cold or acute bronchitis can produce a forceful cough. Allergic rhinitis may cause drainage that irritates the throat, while asthma can cause cough with wheeze or chest tightness. Acid reflux can trigger cough, especially after meals or when lying down. A cough lasting for a prolonged period may be chronic cough and needs a structured review; the sound alone cannot identify which condition is present.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humid environment if dry air aggravates the cough. Note when it started, whether mucus is present, and what brings it on. Do not start antibiotics or someone else’s inhaler without medical advice. Arrange a review if the cough persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or limits normal activity; assessment may include listening to the chest and reviewing medicines and allergies.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or sudden chest pain. Prompt review is needed for a high fever with worsening illness, new wheezing, dehydration, or a cough after choking. Adults with weakened immunity or significant lung disease should seek advice earlier.

Ask what examination or testing is appropriate, whether reflux, allergy or asthma could be contributing, and which warning signs require urgent care. Share your smoking or vaping exposure, medicines, recent infections and any change in breathing.
