Home remedy for sinus infection

Sinusitis is inflammation of the spaces around the nose. It can follow a common cold or be associated with allergic rhinitis. Blocked nose, thick drainage, facial pain or pressure, cough, earache and fever may occur. These symptoms can overlap with other illnesses, so the pattern and duration matter; a blocked nose alone does not confirm a sinus infection.

Rest and drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration. Use a saline spray or rinse to help clear mucus; use sterile, distilled or previously boiled and cooled water for a home rinse, and clean the device after use. A warm shower or warm compress over the face may ease pressure. Sleep with the head slightly raised if drainage is bothersome. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using decongestant sprays, tablets or pain medicine, particularly with high blood pressure, pregnancy, glaucoma or other regular medicines. Do not use antibiotics left from an earlier illness.

Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision changes, a severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, trouble breathing or a very unwell appearance. Arrange medical advice for severe facial pain, persistent fever, symptoms that worsen after initial improvement, repeated episodes or symptoms that do not settle. A clinician can decide whether examination, prescription treatment or further evaluation is needed.
