Home remedies for a sebaceous cyst on the scalp

A cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin that may feel smooth, firm, or mobile. It can remain quiet, become irritated by combing, or become inflamed. Not every scalp lump is a cyst; a clinician may need to examine it, especially if it is new, changing, or difficult to see through the hair. Skin lumps should not be diagnosed from home treatment response.

Wash gently and avoid scratching. A clean warm compress can ease tightness or tenderness; stop if heat increases redness. Cyst removal is the treatment that addresses the cyst wall when removal is appropriate; drainage may be used when a collection needs releasing.

Arrange an appointment if the lump persists, returns, grows, bleeds, or interferes with grooming. Seek prompt care for marked pain, warmth, spreading redness, pus, fever, or feeling unwell, as these features may indicate infection or an abscess needing assessment. Avoid delaying care because a home compress makes soreness temporarily better.
