Home care for an itchy scalp after hair dye

Itching soon after dye can result from irritation or contact allergy to a dye ingredient. Redness, burning, swelling, blisters or weeping skin suggest more than simple dryness. A flare of dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis or scalp psoriasis can also become noticeable around the same time, so timing alone does not confirm the cause.

Rinse the scalp and hair with plenty of lukewarm water until no dye residue remains. Use a mild, fragrance-free shampoo only if needed, then pat dry. A cool damp cloth can calm stinging; avoid scratching, heat, oils, essential oils and further colouring. Do not apply a strong anti-inflammatory or antibiotic cream without advice. Keep the product packaging or ingredient list for a clinician, and do not repeat the dye until the reaction has been assessed.

Get urgent help for swelling of the lips, eyelids, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, dizziness or rapidly spreading hives. Arrange prompt assessment for facial swelling, painful blisters, pus, fever, severe burning or symptoms that do not settle after rinsing. Persistent scale or itch may need evaluation for another scalp condition and targeted treatment.

Ask whether this resembles irritant or allergic contact dermatitis, whether patch testing is useful, and which cleanser or medicine is suitable. Mention the dye brand, application time, previous reactions and any swelling.
