Short answer

Rest, fluids, saline, and a raised head can ease a blocked nose while you recover from flu symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why flu can block the nose

Influenza can inflame the nose and throat, causing congestion, discharge, cough, fever, chills, headache, aches, and pronounced tiredness. A blocked nose can also occur with a cold or allergy, so congestion does not confirm influenza. Exposure, sudden onset, and the presence of strong whole-body symptoms provide useful context.

Flu can be more serious for some people, including those who are pregnant, older, very young, or living with certain long-term conditions. Early clinical advice may matter when risk is higher.

Support recovery

Rest, drink small amounts often, and use saline spray to loosen mucus. Keep the room comfortably ventilated, avoid smoke, and raise your head during sleep if that improves breathing. Use tissues, wash hands, and limit close contact while feverish or acutely unwell.

Ask a clinician promptly whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, especially if symptoms started recently or you have a higher-risk health condition. A pharmacist can check pain or fever medicine for interactions. Avoid duplicating ingredients across cold remedies, and never use antibiotics for flu unless another bacterial condition has been diagnosed.

Warning signs

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, collapse, severe dehydration, or a marked deterioration. Contact a clinician for worsening fever, new shortness of breath, symptoms that improve and then sharply worsen, or inability to manage fluids. Ask about testing and infection precautions if COVID-19 is also possible.

Questions to ask

Could this be influenza, a cold, COVID-19, or allergy? Am I a candidate for antiviral treatment? Which fever or congestion medicine is safe with my conditions, and what warning signs should I monitor?

Questions people ask

Can I use a decongestant with flu?

Some people can, but suitability depends on age, blood pressure, heart health, pregnancy, and other medicines. Check with a pharmacist and follow the label.

Why might I need advice early?

Some people have a higher risk of complications, and clinician-prescribed antiviral treatment may be time-sensitive.
