Home remedies to relieve constipation during pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, constipation may improve with regular fluids, gradual fibre, gentle movement, and a toilet routine; check with your maternity clinician before using laxatives.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Start gently
- Increase fibre and fluids gradually.
- Medication check
- Ask before taking a laxative in pregnancy.
Why constipation can happen
Pregnancy hormones can slow movement through the bowel. As the pregnancy progresses, the growing uterus may also reduce room for the bowel. Iron supplements, changes in activity, nausea, and not drinking enough can add to the problem. Hard stools, straining, bloating, or passing stool less often can all occur. Constipation itself does not mean there is a problem with the pregnancy.
Gentle measures to try
Sip water regularly unless your maternity team has advised fluid restriction. Add fibre gradually through vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, and lentils; increasing it suddenly can worsen gas. A short walk or other pregnancy-approved movement may stimulate bowel activity. Go when you feel the urge, allow unhurried time, and place your feet on a low support so your knees are higher than your hips. Do not start herbal products, suppositories, or laxatives without checking that they are suitable in pregnancy. A nutrition counselling appointment can help tailor food choices if symptoms persist.
When to contact a clinician
Contact your maternity clinician if constipation continues despite self-care, repeatedly returns, or begins after a medicine or supplement change. Seek urgent assessment for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass gas, blood mixed with stool, faintness, or signs of dehydration such as very dark urine and marked dizziness. New bleeding in pregnancy, fluid loss, or regular painful contractions also needs prompt maternity advice.
Questions to ask
Could my iron supplement or another medicine be contributing? Which fibre supplement or laxative is suitable for my stage of pregnancy? How much fluid and activity are appropriate for me?
