Recognising an infestation

Head lice are small insects that live on scalp hair and feed close to the skin. Nits are eggs firmly attached near the hair root; flakes usually slide away more easily. Itching can occur, including itching worse at night, but an itchy scalp alone does not prove lice. Confirming a live louse helps prevent unnecessary treatment.

Steps that reduce spread

Wet the hair, add conditioner, and divide it into sections. Pull a fine-toothed lice comb from the scalp through each section, wiping the comb after every pass. Repeat on a regular schedule until no live lice are found, following local clinical advice. Check close contacts, do not share brushes or hats, and launder recently used pillowcases and clothing.
