Home remedies for a dry cough at night

Short answer
A dry cough at night may ease with warm drinks, throat soothing, cleaner air, and an elevated sleeping position, but breathing trouble or persistent symptoms need review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Try tonight
- Warm fluids, throat soothing, cleaner air, and an elevated upper body

- Meal timing, allergens, wheeze, fever, and how long the cough lasts
Why nighttime cough happens
Lying down can allow mucus from the nose to irritate the throat or allow reflux to reach the upper airway. Dry bedroom air, dust, fragrances, a recent cold, asthma, and airway irritation can also trigger a cough without mucus. The timing is useful: cough after meals may suggest reflux, while symptoms around dust or pets may suggest allergy.
A nighttime dry cough does not identify a single condition. Note wheezing, breathlessness, fever, chest pain, hoarseness, heartburn, nasal blockage, or a cough lasting beyond the expected recovery from a cold.
Nighttime measures
Keep water or a warm drink nearby and soothe the throat with a suitable lozenge. Use a clean humidifier if the room is dry, but maintain it as directed. Remove smoke, incense, aerosols, and strong scents from the bedroom. If reflux seems possible, avoid lying down soon after eating and raise the upper body rather than stacking pillows under the neck.
Honey can soothe an adult throat if it is suitable for you. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or take leftover antibiotics. If a prescribed inhaler is part of your asthma plan, follow that plan and seek advice if it is not controlling symptoms.
When to get medical help
Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pressure, confusion, coughing blood, or inability to speak in full sentences. Sit upright and avoid driving if breathing is seriously affected.
Arrange medical review for a cough that repeatedly interrupts sleep, lasts beyond a reasonable recovery period, comes with fever or chest pain, follows a new medicine, or occurs with wheezing. A clinician can assess the lungs, nose, throat, and reflux pattern and select targeted treatment.
Questions to ask
Ask whether the pattern suggests reflux, allergy, asthma, infection, or medication irritation; whether your bedroom changes are sensible; which treatment is safe with your medicines; and which symptoms should trigger urgent help.
