Home remedies for bald spots in the beard

A sharply defined, smooth patch in the beard can occur with alopecia areata. Itching, scale, crusting, redness or hairs that snap close to the skin may point toward a fungal infection such as scalp ringworm affecting hair-bearing skin. Shaving, friction and inflamed follicles can also change the appearance. A beard patch is a presentation, not a diagnosis.

Clean the area with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, pat dry, and use a clean razor or trimmer without repeatedly passing over the patch. Avoid picking, fragranced oils, hair dyes and shared grooming tools. Photograph the area in consistent light and record itch, scale, pain and spread. Do not use leftover antifungal or steroid medicine without advice.

Book a dermatology appointment if the patch grows, returns, lasts, or is joined by scale, broken hairs, pustules, marked redness or tenderness. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, spreading redness, fever, or eye symptoms. Some infections require prescription treatment, and delaying assessment can expose close contacts through shared grooming items.
