Hoarseness from acid reflux: what to know

The voice box is sensitive to irritation. Reflux may cause a rough or weak voice, throat clearing, cough, a lump sensation, or a sour taste. Symptoms may be stronger after meals, when bending over, or when lying down. Hiatus Hernia can contribute to reflux in some people, while body weight and meal habits can also influence symptoms.

Hoarseness is not specific to reflux. A cold, voice overuse, allergy, or another throat condition can cause a similar change, so persistent symptoms should not be self-diagnosed.

Keep a record of meals and symptoms, eat smaller portions if large meals trigger discomfort, and remain upright after eating. Avoid personal triggers and late meals when possible. Sip water, rest your voice, and avoid smoking. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an antacid or acid-suppressing medicine is suitable; use it as directed.

Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, or inability to swallow. Arrange an appointment for persistent hoarseness, painful or difficult swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that continue despite reasonable self-care. Chest symptoms should not automatically be attributed to reflux.
