What should you know about Hitachi proton beam therapy?

Protons release much of their energy at a planned depth, helping the team shape treatment around nearby organs. A Hitachi system is the equipment that delivers and controls this proton beam; the machine itself does not decide whether proton treatment is suitable.

Suitability depends on the tumour's location, size, movement, previous treatment, and the aim of care. Planning may include imaging, a mould or positioning support, and checks that you can remain in the planned position. The beam is not felt during delivery, although the room, positioning devices, and treatment schedule can be unfamiliar.

Bring your medication list and tell the team about implanted devices, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, previous radiotherapy, and difficulty lying still. Follow the centre's instructions about clothing, eating, drinking, and arrival time.

At each visit, staff position you carefully and may use imaging to confirm alignment. Treatment is planned as a course of visits, with the exact number based on your diagnosis. Keep the treated skin clean and report new discomfort, tiredness, nausea, or changes in appetite so supportive care can be arranged early.

Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening pain, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, new weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or a fever. Seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble, a seizure, sudden one-sided weakness, or loss of consciousness. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether they occur during proton treatment.

Ask why proton treatment is being considered, which organs it may spare, what alternatives are reasonable, how positioning will be managed, and which effects should be reported the same day.
