Hip Impingement Exercises: What to Know

Short answer
Hip impingement exercises should improve hip and trunk control while avoiding repeated positions that reproduce sharp groin pain or catching.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why exercise selection matters
Hip impingement can make deep bending, twisting or bringing the knee toward the chest uncomfortable. The aim is not to force the joint through a painful range; it is to build control around the pelvis, hip and trunk. A physiotherapist can check strength, movement habits and sport demands, then adjust the range and resistance. Hip Pain, Groin Pain and Hip Clicking and Snapping may accompany the condition, but symptoms alone do not confirm the diagnosis.
Hip osteoarthritis can produce overlapping symptoms, so persistent pain deserves a clinical assessment.
A sensible exercise approach
Begin with comfortable movements such as gentle hip range work, bridge variations, side-lying hip strengthening and controlled standing exercises, provided they do not cause sharp pain or a flare that lasts into the next day. Keep the motion moderate, breathe normally and increase resistance gradually. Physiotherapy can provide individual technique checks. Reduce deep squats, forced pivots and repeated high-impact drills while symptoms are irritable.
When to seek assessment
Arrange care if pain limits walking, sleep, work or sport, or if the hip repeatedly catches, locks or gives way. Seek prompt assessment after a significant injury, sudden inability to bear weight, fever, marked swelling or new numbness. If a structured exercise plan does not help, a clinician may discuss options such as a Cortisone Injection or Hip Arthroscopy, depending on the findings.
Questions for your doctor
Which movements should I temporarily limit? What range is safe for strengthening? How should I adapt work or sport? Could another condition explain the symptoms? When should imaging or a different treatment be considered?

Questions people ask
Should hip impingement exercises hurt?
Muscles may work and feel challenged, but sharp joint pain, catching or lasting worsening is a reason to modify the exercise.
Can exercise cure the shape of the hip?
Exercise can improve strength, control and tolerance, but it does not change the underlying bone shape.
