Hip Flexor Bursitis: Symptoms and Treatment

How the structures involved in Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

Hip flexor bursitis is irritation of a fluid-filled sac near the front of the hip that can make movement painful.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical area
Front of the hip or groin
Common trigger
Repeated hip flexion or a sudden activity increase

What is happening

A bursa cushions tissues where they move against one another. Near the front of the hip, irritation can develop after repeated hip flexion, a sudden increase in activity, prolonged pressure, or an underlying joint problem. Pain may be felt in the groin or front of the thigh and can increase when climbing stairs, rising from a chair, or lifting the knee. Tenderness and limited movement may occur; visible swelling is not always present.

Other conditions can cause similar groin pain, including a muscle or tendon injury, arthritis, or a problem inside the hip. An examination helps distinguish these possibilities. Joint swelling elsewhere or a hot, red area may point to a different cause that needs prompt review.

Ways to settle irritation

Reduce the activity that repeatedly loads the front of the hip, but keep gentle movement within a comfortable range so the joint does not stiffen. Avoid kneeling or positions that press directly on the area. Cold applied with a protective layer may ease symptoms for short periods. A clinician may discuss anti-inflammatory medication when it is suitable for your health history. Persistent symptoms may lead to a discussion of an injection or, when fluid needs analysis, aspiration; these are decisions made after examination.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if pain affects walking, sleep, or ordinary hip movement, or if it does not settle after reducing the trigger. Seek urgent care for fever, a hot or rapidly swollen joint, severe pain after an injury, inability to bear weight, or new weakness. These features can signal an infection, significant injury, or another problem requiring prompt treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pain is coming from the bursa, tendon, muscle, or hip joint, and which activities should be changed. Discuss medication safety, whether physiotherapy is appropriate, and what findings would make an injection or aspiration reasonable.

Questions people ask

Is swelling always visible with hip flexor bursitis?

No. The bursa can be irritated even when there is no obvious swelling on the skin.

Can I keep walking with this problem?

Gentle walking may be reasonable if it does not increase pain, but reduce activities that provoke symptoms and arrange an assessment if walking is difficult.
