What should you know about hinge total knee replacement?

In a standard knee replacement, the implant and the patient’s own soft tissues share the work of keeping the knee aligned. A hinged design connects the femoral and tibial components through a mechanical link, helping control movement when important ligaments are severely damaged, absent, or unreliable. It may be considered in complex primary surgery or revision surgery, depending on bone quality, alignment, ligament function, and previous operations. Knee osteoarthritis can be one reason a replacement is discussed, but the implant choice depends on the whole knee rather than the diagnosis alone. Components may include metal alloys, a polyethylene bearing, and sometimes bone cement; your surgeon can explain the selected materials.

Before surgery, discuss your current knee pain, difficulty climbing stairs, walking distance, medicines, and other health conditions. Plan for wound care, safe transfers, transport, and home support. After surgery, rehabilitation usually focuses on swelling control, safe walking, knee movement, and progressive strengthening. After surgery, contact the team promptly for increasing wound redness, drainage, feverish illness, worsening pain, new calf swelling, chest symptoms, or a sudden loss of movement. Urgent assessment is needed for severe breathlessness, chest pain, or fainting. A new fall, a knee that suddenly becomes unstable, or inability to put weight through the leg also warrants prompt advice.
