What should you know about high calcium lung cancer?

Some lung cancers release signals that tell bones to release calcium, while cancer spread to bone can also disturb calcium balance. A blood test confirms the level and clinicians may repeat it, review kidney function, medicines, hydration, and symptoms. Possible effects include thirst, frequent urination, constipation, nausea, muscle weakness, tiredness, confusion, or drowsiness. High calcium is a complication associated with lung cancer; it does not by itself establish the cancer type or explain every symptom.

Contact the treating team promptly about a reported high calcium result, especially if you are vomiting, unusually sleepy, confused, weak, or unable to drink. Treatment may include fluids through a vein and medicines that reduce calcium release from bone; the underlying cancer is managed according to its type, stage, and molecular findings. Ask whether Genomic Tumour Profiling, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, surgery such as Lung Lobectomy, or Palliative Care is relevant to your situation.

Seek emergency help for new confusion, difficulty staying awake, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, chest pain, a seizure, or very little urine. A new or worsening Hoarse Voice, breathlessness, or severe pain also deserves rapid clinical review.
