Can high blood pressure cause a headache?

Headaches commonly arise from tension, migraine, dehydration, infection, vision strain, poor sleep, or medication use. A routine raised blood pressure reading does not prove that it caused the pain. Very high pressure with symptoms can signal strain or injury affecting the brain, heart, or other organs, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

Describe where the pain is, how quickly it began, how long it lasts, and whether light sensitivity, vomiting, weakness, speech difficulty, or visual change occurs. A clinician may check blood pressure repeatedly and look for causes such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea or Chronic Kidney Disease.

If the headache is mild and familiar, rest in a quiet place, drink water if you can, and measure blood pressure using a correctly fitted cuff after sitting quietly. Follow your prescribed plan and avoid taking extra doses to chase a reading. Arrange review for repeated headaches, persistently raised readings, or a change from your usual pattern.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, headache after a head injury, new weakness or numbness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, fainting, confusion, seizure, severe chest discomfort, or major visual change. These features can occur with Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack and should not be watched at home.
