What should you know about HER2 in lung cancer?

HER2 may be assessed as a protein finding, a gene change, or both, depending on the tumour and the laboratory method. A HER2 finding does not by itself show where the cancer began, how far it has spread, or which treatment will be used. The report is read with the lung cancer type, stage, other molecular findings, symptoms, and your general health.

Ask whether enough tissue is available for genomic tumour profiling and whether the result has been reviewed by the specialist team. Treatment may involve surgery such as a lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, a HER2-directed medicine, or supportive care, depending on the individual findings. Bring a list of medicines and tell the team about lung disease, heart problems, neuropathy, or difficulty managing daily activities.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or sudden confusion. Contact your team quickly for a new or worsening cough, hoarse voice, fever, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly increasing weakness. New severe headache, seizure, or one-sided weakness also needs immediate assessment.
