Finding a solution for heel cracks

How the structures involved in Cracked Heels differ from normal

Short answer

A useful heel-crack solution combines regular emollient care, protection from friction, and medical review when fissures are deep or recurrent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Core approach
Moisturise, protect, and identify the cause.
Do not do
Do not cut or pick cracked heel skin.
Early review
Important with diabetes or reduced sensation.

What causes the split

A heel crack is a fissure in thick, dry skin. Pressure spreads the heel outward during standing and walking, while reduced flexibility allows the surface to split. Sandals, hard flooring, frequent hot washing, and not moisturising can add to the cycle. Dry Skin and Cracked Skin are useful descriptions, but neither explains every persistent case.

Scaling, itch, or peeling may indicate Athlete's Foot rather than dryness alone. Recurrent cracks can also accompany inflammatory skin conditions or changes in the way pressure is distributed across the foot.

Steps that support repair

Use an emollient balm on the heel margins after bathing and again at bedtime. Covering the area with a clean sock can reduce rubbing and help the product remain in contact with the skin. Wear closed, supportive footwear when walking, and avoid picking at loose edges. A gentle file can reduce surface scale only when there is no open wound. Stop any product that causes strong burning, and do not apply unlabelled acids or household remedies to a fissure.

When self-care is not enough

Have the foot assessed if the crack is open, bleeding, hot, swollen, draining, or painful enough to limit movement. Arrange review for repeated fissures or no clear improvement with careful moisturising. If you have diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or immune suppression, seek foot-care guidance early and avoid treating deep cracks alone.

Questions for an appointment

Ask what is driving the cracking, whether you need treatment for Athlete's Foot, and which emollient therapy and dressing are appropriate for the depth of the fissure.

Questions people ask

Can a heel crack close with moisturiser alone?

Mild fissures may settle with consistent emollient care, while deeper, painful, or infected-looking cracks need assessment.

Does a recurring crack need a diagnosis?

Yes. Recurrence can reflect pressure, fungal infection, or an inflammatory skin problem that needs targeted care.
