Heavy period after birth: what to know

Periods may be different after pregnancy, including heavier flow, stronger cramps, or an irregular schedule. Breastfeeding can delay ovulation, but it does not reliably prevent pregnancy. Bleeding soon after birth is postpartum discharge rather than a period, and a later sudden increase should be assessed. Other causes of heavy bleeding include fibroids, adenomyosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, or changes in the womb lining. Ongoing blood loss may lower iron stores and cause iron deficiency anaemia.

Write down the first day of bleeding, how often you change protection, clot size, pain, and whether bleeding occurs between periods or after sex. Arrange a medical appointment if the pattern is much heavier than before pregnancy, continues across cycles, or affects daily life. Mention breastfeeding, contraception, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and the details of your delivery. A clinician may recommend blood tests or pelvic imaging after reviewing your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for rapidly soaking protection, faintness, severe weakness, breathlessness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or a sudden heavy bleed after bleeding had eased. A positive pregnancy test with bleeding or pain also needs prompt assessment. If the bleeding is manageable but repeatedly heavy, book a routine review to identify and treat the cause.
