What should you know about heat exhaustion nausea?

Short answer
Nausea with heat exhaustion can reflect heat strain and fluid loss, and it makes careful cooling and small sips of fluid especially important.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main risk
- Nausea can make rehydration difficult
- Safer approach
- Cool down, then take small sips when alert
How nausea fits
Nausea may appear with heavy sweating, thirst, headache, dizziness, weakness or cramps after heat exposure. It can make drinking difficult, which may deepen dehydration and delay recovery. Nausea is not specific to heat exhaustion; infection, medication effects and other conditions can feel similar. The timing, surrounding symptoms and response to cooling help a clinician judge the cause.
What to do now
Stop activity and rest in a cool, shaded or air-conditioned place. Loosen clothing and cool the skin with wet cloths or cool water. When fully alert, take small frequent sips of water or an appropriate rehydration drink. Do not force fluids if vomiting, drowsy or unable to swallow safely. Avoid returning to heat, exercise or alcohol until symptoms have settled.
When to get help
Get emergency help for confusion, collapse, seizure, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink or rapidly worsening symptoms. Arrange medical advice if nausea continues after cooling, urine becomes very dark, dizziness persists or symptoms return with minor activity. Someone else should monitor you while you recover.
Discuss at an appointment
Ask whether you need assessment for dehydration, which fluids are suitable, how to restart activity, and whether any medicine or health condition makes heat exposure more hazardous.
