What should you know about heart related shortness of breath?

Breathlessness from heart failure may worsen with activity or when lying flat and can occur with ankle swelling, tiredness or a cough. Angina may cause pressure or discomfort with exertion and may be accompanied by breathlessness. Atrial fibrillation can make the heartbeat irregular and reduce exercise tolerance. Anaemia can also leave a person short of breath because less oxygen is carried in the blood. Lung conditions such as asthma, COPD, acute bronchitis or bronchiectasis are other possible explanations. Anaphylaxis can cause sudden breathing difficulty with swelling, wheezing or a widespread reaction. The pattern and examination matter more than the symptom name alone.

Stop exertion, sit upright and loosen restrictive clothing. Note whether symptoms began suddenly, occur at rest or follow activity, and record chest discomfort, palpitations, swelling, cough or wheezing. Use a prescribed reliever or heart medicine only as directed. Arrange prompt medical assessment for new, recurring or worsening breathlessness, even if it settles.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, or sudden breathlessness with facial or throat swelling. Do not drive yourself. Sit upright while waiting and follow the emergency operator's instructions.
