Heart failure echocardiogram: what to know

A clinician places a small probe on the chest, using gel to create moving pictures of the heart. The scan can assess chamber size, valve movement, muscle thickness, blood-flow direction, and pumping strength. It may help distinguish reduced pumping from a heart that squeezes normally but has difficulty relaxing. The result is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, blood tests, and an electrocardiogram; an echocardiogram alone does not explain every cause of breathlessness or swelling.

Most standard echocardiograms need no fasting. Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and tell the team about medicines, pregnancy, or difficulty lying flat. The test is usually performed while you lie on your side and may involve gentle pressure from the probe. Take your usual medicines unless the requesting clinician gives different instructions. Keep a note of breathlessness, fatigue, cough, or swollen ankles so changes can be discussed.

Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or chest pressure that does not settle. Contact your clinical team promptly if swelling increases, you cannot lie flat comfortably, or tiredness is markedly worse. These symptoms require assessment regardless of whether an echocardiogram is already booked.

Ask what the scan is assessing, whether the findings suggest a pumping or relaxation problem, and when the report will be reviewed. You can also ask which symptoms should prompt a same-day call, whether medicines need adjustment, and whether a repeat scan or specialist review is appropriate.
