What should you know about heart beating fast and shortness of breath?

A racing or pounding heartbeat may occur with exertion, fever, dehydration, anxiety, caffeine, or some medicines. Breathlessness alongside it can occur with Anaemia, chest infection, Asthma, COPD, or Acute Bronchitis. An irregular rhythm such as Atrial Fibrillation may cause palpitations and reduced exercise tolerance. A severe allergic reaction, called Anaphylaxis, can rapidly affect breathing and needs emergency care. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Stop exertion and sit somewhere safe. Note when the episode began, whether the rhythm feels regular, what you were doing, and any chest discomfort, fever, wheeze, swelling, or dizziness. Avoid stimulants until assessed and take only medicines prescribed for you. Arrange prompt medical review if episodes recur, last longer, or happen with ordinary activity.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or a fast heartbeat with marked weakness. Get immediate help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, widespread hives, or breathing difficulty after food, medicine, or an insect sting. Do not drive yourself during severe symptoms.
