What to know about a healed chemical burn scar

A scar may be darker, lighter, redder, paler, raised, indented, firm, or tight. Chemical injuries can affect different skin depths, and the final appearance depends on the substance, contact time, area, and healing process. Itching or sensitivity may continue even when the surface is closed.

A clinician assesses colour, thickness, movement, pain, and whether the scar is still changing. Facial or hand scars deserve particular attention when tightness affects expression, grip, or nearby joints.

Clean gently, moisturise closed skin, and protect it from sunlight with clothing, shade, and suitable sunscreen. Avoid abrasive exfoliation, picking, and unprescribed acids or lightening products. Do not apply the original chemical or try a home peel. If the scar feels tight, ask a clinician before massage or stretching so the skin is not damaged.

Depending on the scar, fractional laser treatment may target texture or selected colour changes. Scar revision surgery can be considered for a tethered or bulky scar, while a skin graft may be discussed when there is substantial tissue loss. Treatment selection is individual and may involve staged care.

Seek medical review if a healed area becomes newly painful, warm, swollen, increasingly red, open, or draining. Arrange prompt assessment for a scar that grows, bleeds, forms a persistent sore, or restricts movement. Eye pain, vision change, or chemical exposure to the eye requires urgent emergency assessment.

Ask whether the scar is mature enough for treatment, which feature is being targeted, and whether laser, revision surgery, or grafting fits the tissue. Discuss pigment risk, healing time, sun protection, aftercare, and the signs of infection or renewed injury.
